Great Books Reading Group

The Great Books reading group that meets at Eastern Monroe Public Library is one of more than 800 reading groups in the Great Books tradition. "What do we mean by great literature? It is, simply, literature that generations of readers can't stop talking about". To find out more about Great Books reading and teaching programs, please click on this link. Meetings are scheduled at the library on the first and/or third Thursday of each month from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm., September through May based on availability of space at the library. New members are always welcome. For more information or to confirm a date, contact Jean at jenie@ptd.net or Reggie at nepa.greatbooks@live.com.

We will continue exploring The Great Books Foundation Short Story Omnibus (hereafter referred to as Omnibus) for the coming year and, as usual, other interesting readings. The introduction to the Omnibus includes the following quotation: "What do we mean by great literature? It is, simply, "literature that generations of readers can't stop talking about".

We have decided as a group to alter our former schedule (from the 1st and 3rd Thursday starting in October) to begin in September 2011 (our first meeting will be September 1st) and meetings will end in May 2012. Listed below is the current schedule through December of 2011. Early in September Laurel will contact the library and make arrangements for January through May 2012. Our meetings are held at the Eastern Monroe Public Library on Route 611 in Stroudsburg at 7 p.m. (the first Thursday of the month and/or the 3rd Thursday) when room is available at the library as listed on the schedule. We agreed to discontinue dinner meetings. ANY DATE THE LIBRARY CANNOT ACCOMMODATE US, WE WILL NOT HAVE A MEETING, SO SOME MONTHS THERE WILL BE ONLY ONE MEETING.
